Go to www.bhrabbitrescue.org to see my very first published work!!! But of course I do have a better post then this! I actually have a mini story. Note the title. It is a story about a rabbit at the shelter that I volunteer at! Enjoy! I should be posting the continuation in a few days! The Never Ending Brambley Hedge Adventures:
Chester’s Day Out
It was a quite Sunday afternoon at Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue. Most of the bunnies were enjoying a nice nap…but not Chester. Chester never really could sit still. He wanted to be out and about, exploring the vast open land! Of course Chester had no idea that outside of the backyard was streets and sidewalks. But a rabbit could dream. And dream Chester did.
Chester is a cross bread between a Flemish giant and a checkered giant. He has a base color of a pearly white, and he has tan marking across his body. His long ears stand strait up and are a nice dark brown. Chester is about a year old. He was taken in by the rescue from Show Low. That is a long way to travel for a rabbit, and that was the most traveling he did. Occasionally he would be taken on a car ride to a strange location where he saw people come by and look at him. He had often seen some of the other rabbits with him get taken away by the visitors, never to be seen again. “Adoption Events” He had heard the humans call them.
Chester was not fond of these, “Adoption events.” He did not like being in cars and he did not like all of the strange humans looking at him, petting him and holding him. He also didn’t like the idea that one of these people just might take him away. Chester never did like being outside and not being able to run around. And if there was one thing Chester loved, it was running around the yard. And if there was one thing Chester hated, it was being put back into his cage.
That is where Chester was now, inside of his cage. Under him were other cages with other rabbits in them, but he did not like talking with them. He was bored at the moment. There was nothing to satisfy him. A pinecone? It was hardly entertaining. And what was he supposed to do with that ball with the bells on it? Play with it? It was more annoying then fun.
There had to be a way to get out of his cage. Chester thought long and hard. How had he seen the humans do it? He thought back to all the times he had been taken out of his cage. He recalled seeing them pull a small hook up, then out. And then the cage door just fell open. Was that all there was to it? Surly it couldn’t be that easy? Chester thought about different times when he was let out. Yep, that is all they did.
So how was he to do it? Chester was a rabbit. They were humans with fingers…Chester resorted to the only thing he could do. He put his front paws against the door so that his face was by the latch. He searched for the small hook he had seen the humans pull. Yes, there it was! Chester put his bottom teeth under the hook. Then, with a jerk of his head, he heard a metal clang. Chester licked his lips and examined his work. The door wasn’t open, but the hook was almost off! Chester made another attempt. This time he felt the hook slide from his mouth. He heard a metallic, “Bo-oi-io-oi-oing!”
Yes! He had done it! The door had fallen open. Chester peered over the side of his cage. It wasn’t a long fall. He had jumped higher free foot. This would be no problem at all! Chester sized up the jump, and then leapt! He landed with a soft thud. “Chester, what are you doin’?” He heard a voice say. He turned; it was Mia, the New Zealand mix. Mia was about 5 years old. She was completely white with lovely pink eyes. Mia shared a cage with her daughter, Maggie. They were completely identical, except for the fact that Maggie was slightly larger then her mother.
“Oh, Mia! Just stay out of it!” Chester snapped. “Now, Chester. If you are tryin’ to do, what I think you are tryin’ to do, I wouldn’t do it. Just stay inside and you’ll get let out when it’s your turn.” Mia said. “Well the problem with that is that I don’t want to wait! Now, I am going to go, and I don’t want to hear another word about it!” Chester hopped off. “Well, I don’t care. I was just wonderin’ how you were going to get the door open!” Mia called after him. Chester stopped. He totally forgot about the fact that large the door to outside was shut. Mia was right; there was no way for a rabbit to open the door.
Chester decided to think this through. There had to be something he could do. Maybe he could get out the back door. He hopped around the room to the back door. It was completely closed. Chester hopped closer to the door. He examined it carefully. He noticed that the door was made of a soft wood. It wasn’t as hard as the first door. Chester also noticed a wide slit at the bottom of the door. Maybe he could chew a hole big enough to fit through! It was worth a shot. Chester began his work.
He slipped the bottom of the door between his teeth and bit as hard as her could. Chester felt the wood brake away. Chester spit out the small piece of wood. This would be easier then he thought it would be! Chester continued to bite away pieces of the door. In no time at all he had a decent hole chewed into the bottom of the door. Adventure was tasteless work! Chester turned and looked at Mia, “Good bye caged ones!” He said before slipping through the hole.
TO BE CONTINUED…. (For some reason my computer is being wierd, so that is why this isn't spaced correctly!)
